Arctech's Hail Mode protects photovoltaic modules by minimizing the impact area during hail events. Trackers orient vertically, nose-up, for maximum protection against large hail. Modules maintain this position unless overridden by higher-priority weather modes. Due to the rapid onset of hail, on-site sensors alone cannot ensure module safety. Instead, hail alarms must be triggered by the SCADA system, supported by local weather forecasts, to allow timely protective positioning.
When a hail forecast is received near the site, operators can send a hail mode command via SCADA system to each NCU, if no higher priority mode is active, the NCUs then broadcast the safety position for the trackers based on the wind direction.
Once the operator determines that the hail risk has finished, they can change the Hail mode to Auto mode via SCADA system manually. Each NCU will send a command to the TCUs to return the auto mode.
